SEVA
The
word seva has several spiritual connotations.
It could be described as the central value of Community
service or as working for the benefit of others. The Sanskrit
word seva translates directly as string,
implying that all things are connected in the thread of
existence. To engage with one is to engage with the whole.
Likewise, to serve one is to serve the whole. Seva
is selfless service done with no thought of the end result;
performed without attachment and with no expectation of
reward or even acknowledgment of the work done.
Serving
Unique Needs
Immigrant
populations have unique needs. For example the South Asian
and Hispanic and many other immigrant communities face all
the challenges of a residential population combined with
a large immigrating and visiting population who they often
have to care for. And these challenges are very apparent
in the health care area. Logistical concerns such as language
barriers, transportation needs and lack of knowledge of
local health care perspectives are all elements impacting
and influencing health care services for such communities.
